Putty In My Hands

Here's another recent piece, commissioned as a Christmas gift. Well, by now it's been opened by its intended recipient, so I guess its okay to share it with the rest of you folks.

I don't wanna go all Gabe Jones on ya and blow my own horn, but I gotta say, this has to be one of my all-time very favorite illos. You may or may not agree with that assessment, but you gotta admit, it's not something I say often (if ever...)

Anyway, here it comes (and yeah, you CAN see it larger--just click on the image)
I was given the task via the aforementioned commission to draw several stretching or otherwise malleable characters--Mr. Fantastic, Plastic Man, Daredevil's antagonist Stilt-Man, Jack Kirby's Machine Man, Warlock of The New Mutants, and The Inhumans' Medusa--in whatever sort of group scenario I pleased. This was the result. What a fun bunch, don'tcha think?

And now, True Believers, the time has come once again for December's SECOND most celebrated birthday!
Happy
STAN LEE DAY!!
Nuff said?

When it comes to Stan, never.

The man is Fantastic, Amazing, and Incredible, with the Uncanny ability to keep us in Suspense, all the while Astonishing us--even if he is a bit Strange at times! So Face Front, Hang Loose, and bake yourself an Excelsior stuffed cake--Stanley Lieber was born on this very day, and I heartily contend we're all the better for it!!

Sherlock Holmes note: I forgot to mention this yesterday, but good ol' TCM (Turner Classic Movies for the uninitiated) is running 24 straight hours of Holmes flicks commencing at 8 PM Christmas night (EST), plus running a 2 hour silent version Sunday at midnight (actually, Monday--careful how you program your recorder), so if, like us, you don't make it out to the premiere of the Robert Downey Jr flick (we'll see it in a couple months when it hits our budget second-run multiplex), and you're jonesing for some Sherlock, TCM's got you covered!!

More soon!!!!

... And Everything Nice...

Another holiday treat for you all--a specially commissioned original Sugar and Spike cover...
This specially commissioned tribute to the legendary Sheldon Mayer, creator of Sugar and Spike and oh so much more, features (as per my patron's specific requests) the pint-sized duo, Bernie The Brain, The Three Mouseketeers, Scribbly and his baby brother, Ma Hunkle (aka The Red Tornado) and the Tornado Twins, a fellow who Mr. Mayer helped get off the ground named Superman, a couple of his All-American Comics characters, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman, and Sugar's folks (or are they Spike's?...). Plus, Santa Fred and comely associate. Bad Santa pun courtesy of yours truly.

To see it at a larger size, just--you guessed it!--click the above image!

Ho-ho-hope you liked it!!

Irving Tripp, RIP

Like a lot of folks, I've generally assigned the lion's share of credit for the genius of the classic Little Lulu strips to John Stanley, who not only wrote them, but provided rough art layouts as well. But like a lot of folks, I think I undervalued the contribution made by Irving Tripp, who provided the finished artwork. I am and always will be a great admirer of Stanley's, but as good as his collaborators were on other strips--Dunc and Loo, Nancy and Sluggo, Thirteen--none quite achieved the level of compatibility that he had with Tripp.

Irving Tripp utilized a sure, simple, and unyielding line in his inking, and while his pencilling could never be called fluid in the manner of so many moonlighting animators who manned Dell Comics title back in the forties and fifties, his precise depiction of each and every cast member--depictions that never wavered from panel to panel, story to story, issue to issue, or even decade to decade--installed a degree of reliable comfort rarely seen elsewhere on the comics rack. Lulu's world remained visually consistent for years, and a great deal of the credit for that has to go to Mr. Tripp. Mix in the delightfully witty work of Stanley, and you have a strip that has pretty much remained my personal all-time favorite since reading my first Little Lulu comic back at age six . Somehow, characters that look almost to be mechanically cut from templates, with limbs that bend only relatively slightly, somehow these characters were nonetheless brought vividly to life by Irving Tripp's uniquely brilliant artwork.

He'll be missed, but as long as I'm around, he'll never be forgotten.
