Updated April 2015
All of my commission work is done on 2 ply plate bristol paper, of varying sizes (color available ONLY on 9" x12" bristol and cards). The artwork is drawn using India ink filled rapidographs, with large black areas filled in using Sharpies. Color work utilizes a wide selection of Prismacolor markers for the hues, done over the black outlines. All payment is upon commissioning the work--as they say in Asgard, "In Odin we trust--all others pay upfront"!
Cover reinterpretations are going for $200.00 a shot. These are black and white drawings done as a 10" x 15" image on a 14" x 17" piece of 2-ply plate bristol as interpreted using my style. All lettering and blurbs are included (but see below for UPC box choices, if applicable). Wrap-around covers? Simple: double the price, done on 18" x 24" sized bristol.
Full-color cover reinterpretations are also available for $200.00 each, but are ONLY offered with an image size similar to the actual published cover, done on a sheet of 9" x 12" bristol.
(Note: Certain covers, such as FANTASTIC FOUR 236 and FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL 3, will set you back an additional $25 to $50 each, depending. I've done redos of both in the past for the regular price, and have decided that a little extra, ahem, financial inducement would be necessary to get me to do 'em again! Still, you'll get pretty good bang for your buck. Other, as yet unspecified covers might fit into this category as well, but not many, so I'm thinking $200 will still get you most anything. I'm just reserving the right here to preserve what little sanity I have left, dig?...)
I reserve the right to reject a request. I'm sure that there's a cover out there composed of such stunning detail that the very thought of redrawing it would set me screaming -- that's right folks, I've yet to recreate a Crisis On Infinite Earths cover!
If your desired cover has a UPC box, please specify if you want it: a) duplicated, complete with lines and numbers, b) a direct sales version -- i. e. a Spidey head or a DC slogan ("The NEW DC: There's No Stopping Us Now!")(coff coff), or c) eliminated all together with me drawing what I project to be behind that nasty little box.
Splash pages are also available for reinterpretations. Title pages, full pages found within the body of the story, double page center spreads (at twice the price, natch) -- the same terms as for covers apply, with one small exception: while I reletter the covers exactly as printed, I'm afraid I'm going to have to draw the line at reproducing the indicia found at the bottom of most title pages. Let's all just ignore that tiny type, OK?
Color Sketch Cards
Drawn on Strathmore's plate bristol 2.5" x 3.5" Artist Trading Cards, single character cards would set you back $10 each (though I reserve the right to charge a bit more for highly detailed characters like Judge Dredd, various members of KISS, and such like). A pair of characters, such as Batman and Robin, would go for $15. A group shot of, say, the Metal Men--head shots, gathered together--would retail starting at $25. And though I haven't done many of late, I still offer cover redo cards, starting at $35, and up, depending on the difficulty (and here, I definitely reserve the right to turn down anything that I feel will ruin my eyesight once and for all! Please be kind and keep that in mind!...)
Single Character and or/Group Illos, color or B&W
A single character in full color on a sheet of 9" x 12" costs $60. Two characters, $80. More would be negotiable. Full color group pics--such as of the Avengers, JLA, etc.--are also available, costing between $100 and $200, depending on the number of characters involved.
Black and white artwork is also available in the larger sizes of 11" x 14" and 14" x17". A single character on a sheet of 11" x 14" would be $50; two characters, $75. And if you're looking for a illo of the entire Legion of Super-Heroes, that would best be done on a sheet of 14" x 17", at a price to be negotiated later.
Blank Variant Cover Color Illos
I'm happy to draw your commission on the cover of one of the many blank variant covers the big companies are offering, but doing so generally means you need to mail the comic in question to me first. A simple single character color illo would cost $50, with the price rising depending upon the requested scenario's amount of detail.
DC Daily Planet HEMBECK gag strip redos
Full color recreations of the DC Daily Planet HEMBECK gag strips (1978-1981) are also available at larger than original size. Indicate which strip you'd like and I'll redraw it, 10" across by 4" deep, centered on an 9" x 12" page for $50.00.
Across The Page illos
What exactly are Across the Page illos? Go here to the Across The Page Gallery to see for yourself. If you'd like to commission one for yourself, here's the specifics: they're done on a piece of 11x14 inch 2 ply plate Bristol. Six to nine characters, two of which run off either side of the page (your choice, if you're so disposed), at least one of which is hovering in the air throwing a lightning bolt like shadow on the ground (my choice), with a background of cross-hatching. IMPORTANT--the characters are drawn in an even more exaggerated style than my usual (you should pardon the expression) standard approach, so please be aware of that when commissioning one of these pieces. As for the price, it all depends on the number of characters requested and how accessible the necessary reference is. For example, the range might go something like this: for the six original X-Men, $125. For nine members of Youngblood, $175--which would pretty much be the extremes (okay, I'd throw in Magneto too for the hundred twenty-five clams--it's all very negotiable). So give me an idea what you're looking for and we can take it from there!
Full-blown strips, pin-ups for your Kickstarter project, and any other thing you can think of, also likely available. You have but to ask--and when I figure out a fair fee, you have but to pay!
Oh -- and let me know if you have any special requests concerning signing the piece -- "To Ezekiel, from Fred", for instance, or just my name -- hey, it's your call.
And lastly, about getting 'em to you: I've been able to turn over most requests within several months, if not sooner, but you never know when the time'll come when somebody at one of the companies has that BIG assignment for me, the one that has to be done TODAY. Allow me, please, to put your drawing aside for a bit to take care of that business, should the scenario arise. For a long delay, I'll contact you via e-mail, so you'll know your status. Odds are, the problem won't arise, but should it, I'll make sure you'll be satisfied.
NO Personal Caricatures
A number of failed attempts have convinced me to reject all requests for personal caricatures out of hand, so unless you're Ed Asner looking to relive his glory days as Lou Grant, I'm afraid I can't help you -- sorry. For famous people, maybe. Depends. Check with me.
We post material for auction on eBay constantly, primarily--but not limited to--color sketch cards. Take a look here:
For payment, For payment, I accept personal checks, money orders, or PayPal. Payment must be in US funds. If payment is by International Money order, the cost is $10.00 extra since that is what my bank charges to cash the check. PayPal payments should be made to email@example.com .
For each order of a 14" x 17" piece, I request $15.00 for postage and handling for shipping to a US address. International buyers, please inquire, since rates depend upon cost of shipping to your country. That's per order -- if you want, say, 3 single character sketches and a cover that'd only put you out 15 bucks for postage for all, but should you order 'em separately, it'd be 15 dollars a pop, dig? However, I've learned through experience that wrap-around cover recreations done on 18" x 24" sheets are costlier to mail, so when ordering any double page spread, I'll have to charge $30.00 for postage and handling. (NOTE: 18" x24" size NOT available overseas, as mailing things that large is a tremendous hassle--sorry.)
Artwork sized 11"x 14", 9" x12", and blank variant covers can be mailed off, per package, for $10 each. Please inquire for international rates.
Sketch cards, $3 per order up to 9 cards; 10 to 20 cards, $5 per package; 21 cards and up, please inquire. And for international mailings, also please inquire.
